Uss little rock
According to the U.S. Naval Institute News, defense contractor General Dynamics, will install a 150-kilowatt combat laser aboard the USS Little Rock, which will be part of the US Navy's 4th Flotilla responsible for controlling the waters of Central and South America.
The laser was developed by Lockheed Martin. With his help, the crew of the USS Little Rock will be able to fight drones and small aircraft. It could probably also destroy larger targets - small boats and even speedboats like those used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
However, this laser has a significant drawback - a strong dependence on weather conditions, in particular, on the presence in the ambient air of dust, smoke, water, ice particles, which significantly reduce its combat capabilities.
USS Little Rock will be the fourth US Navy ship to be equipped with a laser. Recall that the first was the USS Ponce amphibious ship with a Kratos Defense AN / SEQ-3 (LaWS) laser weapon system with a capacity of 30 kilowatts, installed in 2014. Later, combat lasers were also installed on the missile destroyer USS Dewey and on the landing ship USS Portland - they received, respectively, 60 kW Odin and 150 kW SSL-TM systems.
