While the United States prepares for Star Wars, Chinese engineers are developing the most advanced ground-based weapons - the laser. One of their latest developments is the ZKZM-500 laser assault rifle, capable of setting fire to flammable objects and causing severe burns.
According to the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post, specialists from the Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics have developed a powerful laser rifle, which will soon enter service with the anti-terrorist police special forces.
The 15 mm ZKZM-500 weighs 3 kg, which roughly corresponds to the weight of the famous AK-47. The firing range is 800 meters. The rifle can be mounted on cars, boats and airplanes. When carrying out anti-terrorist operations, it can be used for firing at windows, as well as for covering special forces soldiers.
The beam is powerful enough to ignite a gas tank or flammable materials. The laser shot is completely silent and invisible. "Ammunition" ZKZM-500 is concentrated in a lithium battery, designed for 1000 laser impulses lasting about two seconds each. The rifle is priced at $ 15, 000.
